Bahrain's unions call for general strike

The General Federation of Bahraini Trade Unions (GFBTU) has called for a general strike on Monday 21 February if the country's monarch does not back down.

According to the Gulf Daily News: Speaking after the announcement, GFBTU assistant secretary for the private sector Karim Radhi said the terms of the strike depend on two key points.

"We are calling for people to strike until all military forces are withdrawn and the peaceful protests are allowed to continue without any confrontation," he said.

"We were in the middle of writing the statement when we heard the news that the military has pulled out but there is also another condition to the call; that these people be free to continue demonstrating without being attacked."
