The Iraqi Freedom Congress reported on 16 February that the Iraqi army had surrounded demonstrations in Baghdad's Tahrir Square, beat demonstrators, and stormed an opposition TV station.
Following seven days of demonstrations in Tahrir Square in Baghdad, the Iraqi government troops after having surrounded the protestors gave them the options of either ending the demonstrations in the square or to move the rally to Abu Nawas Street (which was a few kilometers from where they were gathering). When the demonstrators rejected the request, the troops began preventing the media from covering the event and physically attacking and beating the demonstrators, also the same troops broke into the Sana TV headquarter to intimidate its members and confiscate all its equipments in an attempt to recover tapes shot during the demonstrations.
